Treat for wrestling buffs in old city

For the die-hard fans of old city, it was an evening with a difference when wrestlers from across the city showcased their skills at the two-day Republic Day Championship which underway at the Barkas Grounds on Thursday.

Even as the organisers battled all odds to ensure that the event got off to a good start, the competitors too braved the cold conditions and the opponents to score a few points.

14th year

Samaj Sewak Welfare Association, thanks to the efforts of GHMC corporator Amjedullah Khan, is incidentally hosting the event for the 14{+t}{+h}consecutive year.

The event coming close to the senior national wrestling and the Hind Kesari Championship at the Lal Bahadur Stadium recently drew big crowds if the attendance at the venue was any indication.

“Given the hardship we faced when we were initially denied permission to host the meet and which we got it later thanks to the High Court order, we are really pleased with the response and hope to see bigger crowds when the finals are scheduled tomorrow,” Mr. Khan said. There are special categories like the Bal Kesari title (35 kg to 40 kg) besides the overall championship. Also involved in the conduct of the meet was Andhra Kesari Khaled Bamas.

The competitions was formally inaugurated by Amer Ali Khan, News Editor, Siasat Urdu Daily and Mr. Amjedullah Khan.
