ELURU: The West Godavari district police on Monday claimed to have busted a 12-member gang thriving on trafficking of women to Singapore. They arrested six persons, including two from Chennai, and rescued a minor girl. Three Singapore nationals—Maran, Murugan and Kumar also figured in the case. According to M.M. Bhagawat, DIG of Police, Eluru range, policemen acting as decoys rescued the girl in a filmy style from the traffickers during a raid at Paidiparru near Tanuku leading to busting of the gang. A special team led by Kovvuru DSP G. Janakisharmila went to Chennai and arrested Govindaswamy Muruganandan alias Murugan and Satyaveni in association with a Non Governmental Organisation-- Just Trust-- for allegedly acting as a conduct for trafficking to Chennai from different parts of the country. It was yet ascertained how many girls are languishing in the red light areas of Singapore, the DIG said.
Mr. Bhagawat said that a request would be made to the Indian High Commission in Singapore and the Union Ministry of External Affairs for extradition of the three Singapore nationals.
