VIJAYAWADA: An exhibition with miniatures of famous temples and tourist spots and stalls showing the artefacts and handicrafts from different parts of the country, such as Kondapalli toys and Uppada sarees, were the main attraction at the World Tourism Day celebrations held in the auditorium of Maris Stella College on Thursday. Though the World Tourism Day is observed on September 27, staff and students of the department of history and tourism organised the celebrations well in advance in view of the Dasara vacation in the last week of the month.

Regional Manager of the APSRTC A. Koteswara Rao, who was the chief guest of the function, inaugurated the exhibition and observed that tourism had been given industry status. It was now providing huge income to the exchequer and employment to thousands of people. “In countries like Singapore, tourism’s share is about 30 per cent of the gross domestic product of the country,” he observed.
