Police arrested top naxalite leader Poosa Shiva Narayana (45) alias Venkanna alias Chinna on Monday during a routine checking of vehicles at Pragnapur in Medak district.

According to Gajwel Circle Inspector T. Amrutha Reddy, Shiva Narayana was involved in several cases, including murder and arson. At least one murder case and three arson cases were registered against him under Gajwel police station limits alone.

Carried Rs. 5 lakh reward on head

He carried a reward of Rs. 3 lakh, while some officials said that it had been increased to Rs. 5 lakh.

According to sources, Shiva Narayana, a native of Bejagama village in Gajwel mandal, started as a courier and militant in the erstwhile Peoples War Group (PWG) in 1989 and worked for three years in this area before becoming a dalam member in 1992. He worked for a decade before being shifted to Nallamala forest area in 2002.

After working for about two years, in 2004, he was again shifted to Andhra - Odisha Borders (AOB) of CPI (Maoist) and was entrusted the task of protecting members of the Central Committee.

Shiva Narayana has been heading a well-trained and well-armed 11-member team to protect important leaders of the CPI (Maoist) till recently.

After suffering a paralytic stroke six months ago, he was reportedly relieved of the responsibility by the party and asked to undergo the treatment.

The naxalite leader was on his way to meet a doctor for paralytic treatment when he was arrested by the police while travelling in a bus. Shiva Narayana was produced before Gajwel Judicial First Class Magistrate U. Udayabhaskar who remanded in Charlapally jail.
