Municipal corporation urged to tap the Godavari
VISAKHAPATNAM: Water from the Godavari should be pumped to meet the city’s domestic needs in view of the scarcity expected in the forthcoming summer, the BJP city unit has urged the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation.
A BJP delegation led by the party city unit president M. Nagendra met Municipal Commissioner V.N. Vishnu in the backdrop of the move to supply water on alternate days some time in the next three weeks.
It may be recalled that when the city faced acute water shortage between 2000 and 2003 all political parties including BJP made efforts and brought pressure on the government paving the way for the Godavari water scheme.
The pumping scheme materialised at an outlay of Rs.450 crores of which the municipal corporation’s contribution was Rs.100 crores.
The BJP recalled that the government as well as the corporation had promised continuous water supply after the completion of the scheme. It wanted to know how the water supply position went awry in spite of the Rs. 100 crores of the taxpayers’ money the corporation had spent.
It charged the corporation with failure to get adequate water from the Godavari to the city.
The delegation pointed out that the roads were in a bad shape after underground drainage work was taken up. The work should be completed at the earliest to end people’s troubles, it urged.
