GUNTUR: The Flue-Cured Virginia Tobacco, for the first time, on Friday fetched Rs.100 per kg on the Devarapalli auction platform in the North Light Soils area, which is the highest ever price offered to tobacco in the history of country’s auctions.

The average price realised per kg during current auction season that started on February 1 in Andhra Pradesh was Rs.74.75 against last year’s Rs.47.34. The total quantum so far auctioned on all the platforms crossed 70 million kg and it was racing towards reaching 100 million kg by this month-end with several exporters and importers actively participating in the auctions. Day’s average price touched Rs.78.03 per kg on March 31 and it was much higher compared to average of Rs.59.23 per kg realised on Karnataka auction platform, where quality is considered to be higher.
