Auctions for sale of Flue Cured Virginia (FCV) tobacco in Andhra Pradesh will begin on February 15, 2014 simultaneously on all auction floors, Board Chairman Koothati Gopal said here on Tuesday.

The Board has decided to continue with the e-auction system which has been awarded Aegis Graham Bell Award for the year 2013.

“We will complete the auctions in Karnataka by the end of January and will commence the auctions in AP on February 15. The auctions will be fool proof and those resorting out of floor sale will be dealt with ruthlessly,” Dr. Gopal told The Hindu on Tuesday. The annual production of FCV tobacco in A.P is expected to touch a little over 170 million kg and the Board expects that the farmers could have a bumper yield.

With the average price during auctions held in Karnataka rising by Rs.16.50, farmers in A.P could expect a higher price. The average price in Karnataka touched Rs.137 per kg in 2013-2014 in comparison with the average price of Rs.121 in the year 2012-2013. The highest price was quoted at Rs.173 for Bright grade varieties.

In A.P too, the average price touched Rs.155 during 2012-2013. The highest rate offered to Bright grade of tobacco grown on NLS soil was Rs.198 in A.P. The Board, while ensuring that unfair trade practices were dealt sternly, has been campaigning on certain issues relating to tobacco farming.

The Board has carried out extensive campaign on rampant use of chemical pesticides and ensured that farmers were educated on the negative effects of the practice. “We have also focused on integrated pest management and encouraged use of bio pest management,” he said. The Board came down heavily on use of non-tobacco related material and stressed on good practices in threshing, packing of the product.
