Jeep rams into petty shop in a bid to avoid hitting a boy
TIRUPATI: Three persons -- two Ayyappa devotees and a little boy -- were killed and five others grievously injured when a jeep ploughed through a roadside pettyshop at Kalroadpalle on the Tirupati-Chittoor highway on Monday.
According to Chandragiri police, two victims were cousins hailing from Kaputhungalam village of Gajuwaka mandal in Visakhapatnam district and were part of a 16-member party on a pilgrimage to Sabarimala. After Ayyappa darshan, the group was on its way in the jeep to the famous Vinayaka temple at Kanipakam near Chittoor, when the accident occurred.
In his bid to avoid hitting a boy Aravind (9), who suddenly appeared from nowhere, the driver of the ill-fated jeep was said to have swerved and lost control, before knocking him down and also ramming into the petty shop before coming to a halt. The fellow passengers Appa Rao, Ramesh, Kasi, Suryanarayana and Pydi Raju, all Ayyappa devotees, were being treated at the SVRR Government General Hospital here. The owner of the petty shop Venkataramaiah too suffered serious injuries and is undergoing treatment. The Tirupati DSP Ch. Rajaiah visited the spot.
