VIJAYAWADA: The management, staff, students and alumni of the Andhra Loyola College came together and paid rich tributes to former Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy at a solemn meeting held in Fr. Devaiah auditorium on Saturday.

Rector A. Stanley and correspondent D. Showraiah recalled the strong bond that the institution had with Reddy ever since the days of his study.

They pointed out that the Reddy used to give credit to the ALC for imbibing in him the unforgettable qualities of motivation, commitment and discipline.

Fr. Showraiah elaborated how Reddy was persistent in pleading with the Loyola management for taking over the Y.S. Raja Reddy Degree College at Pulivendula as he had full faith in the Jesuits’ commitment to the growth of an educational institution by ensuring standards. Other speakers went down memory lane, recounting various experiences they shared with Reddy since the days of his one-year study for Pre University Course (PUC) in the college during 1963-64. Suryaprakasa Rao, whom Reddy used to fondly call “Gurugaru”, remembered the days when Y.S. Raja Reddy brought his son to admit him in the college.

It was Mr. Suryaprakasa Rao’s father who acted as the local guardian of Reddy when he was studying PUC. According to Mr. Suryaprakasa Rao, it was with the motivation of Raja Reddy that the young boy chose BiPC in the PUC, so as to study MBBS later.

Raja Reddy wanted his son to become a doctor and render service to the people.

Mr. Suryaprakasa Rao said that a wish of Reddy remained unfulfilled, and it was to go round the entire campus of Andhra Loyola College and also its offices, classrooms and hostels to see how it had developed.

‘Cheerful’

Noted dental surgeon A. Sridhar Reddy said that with a disarming and cheerful smile Reddy used to greet people and resolve their problems without a single sign of tediousness.
