The first nationalistic celebration of the year, the Republic Day is a celebration of freedom.

It commemorates the day that the Constitution of India came into effect, specifically, 26 January, 1950. On that day India officially cast aside British laws and enforced its own permanent constitution, completing the country's transition toward becoming an independent republic. It is the day India became a truly sovereign state and the country finally realised the dream of Mahatma Gandhi and the numerous freedom fighters who fought for and sacrificed their lives for Independence. Historical reasoning apart, the highlight of this day is the Republic Day Parade. The grand parade that starts at The Raisina Hill and ends at the India Gate along the majestic Rajpath in Delhi. It features contingents and displays from the Army, Navy, and Air Force. The parade also includes colourful floats from each of India's states and ministries. The crème of N.C.C cadets, selected from all over the country and school children from various schools in the capital also participate in the parade adding colour and gaiety.
