The sky is awash with kites of all hues and sizes. It is the time of the year when all eyes involuntarily turn skywards. But the city is witnessing kite flying of a different kind too. Here the players have their eyes trained at Delhi. As the boys in the street run amuck to catch a fallen kite, the leaders are busy at their own game trying to scuttle the chances of their adversaries. In this game of political one-upmanship no quarter is asked and none given. The Sankranti revellers exhibit their dexterity in trapping a kite while the political honchos show off their skills in pulling power strings. Who is holding how many aces, the latest entrants and deserters – the kite flying goes on. Of course this power game played behind close doors is as engaging as the boisterous sport outdoors.
