This year 292 teams will be vying for the regional finalist slot
VISAKHAPATNAM: The grand finale of the ninth edition of the annual multi-city quiz for school children -- The Hindu Young World Quiz 2008 -- is all set to take the young quiz buffs of the city to a new quizzing height on Thursday. For the first time the national finals will be held in this city at the Port Kalavani Auditorium from 2.30 p.m. onwards. In the morning session from 9.30 a.m. the regional finals will be held at the same venue.
The regional finals for the other 12 centres - Chennai, Puducherry, Madurai, Coimbatore, Trichy, Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Kozhikode, Mangalore, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Vijayawada have already been held. In all, regional finalists (including the finalist from Visakhapatnam) will battle it out for the national top spots, in the afternoon session.
The regional finalist team from this city will be selected in the morning session.
The Hindu meets the cost of travel, boarding and lodging for the teams from outstation, with one accompanying parent or teacher. In the morning regional finals, as usual there will be a preliminary written round, to select the six regional finalists, which will be followed by the final rounds on stage for the top slot.
Schools from neighbouring places like Srikakulam, Damonjodi (Orissa) and Vizianagaram have been participating regularly.
A team comprises of two students, with a maximum of three teams from each school. This year 292 teams from 101 schools will be vying for the regional finalist slot.
The event will be conducted by Quizwalahs and The Hindu’s in-house quizzer, V.V. Ramanan, will be the quizmaster. A lot of goodies and prizes are at stake, for both the sessions, as the quiz is being sponsored by companies like Extramarks.com (title sponsor), D.C. Books and Mango, Pepsico Cheetos, Kissan Amaze Brainfood, Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (associate sponsors), Cycle Brand Agarbathi, Encyclopaedia Britannica, Reynolds, State Bank of Travancore, Penguin Books, Firefox Bikes, Lotte (national sponsors) and Dabur Real Fruit Juice (official drink).
