VISAKHAPATNAM: Transgender (TG) people have decided to come out, albeit as a small group, for their rights by creating awareness on their problems instead of suffering silently. Due to an initiative of a few activists, they have decided to create awareness that TG is different from lesbians and gays. TG people are mostly misunderstood as ‘hijra’. Though some in the community embrace ‘hijra’, all ‘hijras’ need not be TGs.
An activist associated with Grama Swarajya Samithi (GSS) – which is working for the well-being of men having sex with men (MSM), female sex workers (FSM) and TGs – says: “It is wrong to interpret TG as a psychiatric case or psychological discrepancy.”
