Meeting to distribute pension causes a lot of disturbance to students

VISAKHAPATNAM: SSC examination centres are strictly guarded places for the few hours when the examination is on. Prohibitory orders under Section144 are imposed at every centre and no unauthorised person is allowed inside or near the centres. Also, people are sensible and do not create noise pollution.

But politicians and officials created a lot of disturbance on Friday for a few hundred students appearing for the examination in the school near the District Library in the old city area.

A meeting to distribute pension to senior citizens, widows and physically challenged was held adjacent to the school when the examination was going on. The meeting lasted for some 40 minutes.

With politicians, including the local MLA, the chairman of the ward committee of the area and the local corporator, delivering speeches along with UCD officials of the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation and the names of beneficiaries announced over the public address system, the examinees had to try hard to concentrate on the questions and tick the right answer. They faced more trouble as the bar coding system, which confused many of them, was also introduced the same day. Parents of some students who were waiting at a distance were angry and frustrated as the meeting disturbed their wards.

It was shocking that neither the politicians nor the officials considered it inappropriate to conduct the meeting adjacent to an examination centre. It was astonishing that the police too allowed the meeting to take place.
