Telugu Mahila, district committee, condemned the increasing atrocities on women, particularly in the last 40 days in the district and flayed Home Minister Sabita Indra Reddy for her inefficient handling of law and order.
Members of the committeeled by district president Gummadi Sandhya Rani and former minister Padala Aruna submitted a memorandum to Superintendent of Police Karthikeya on Thursday.
At a press conference, Ms. Sandhya Rani said though five cases were reported, including four in February and one on Wednesday, the police remained clueless, except rape and murder of a 39-year-old woman Gopisetti Nirmala at Venkatarayudupeta village in Bobbili mandal last month. Though TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu raised the gang rape issue in the Assembly session, there was no action yet, except arresting four of the 11 persons involved in the incident, she said.
Ms. Sandhya Rani said following atrocities on women, the committee collected 50,000 signatures condemning the incidents and submitted them to Mr. Karthikeya demanding protection to women.
Ms. Padala Aruna felt that free flow of liquor was the main cause for higher number of atrocities on women. State leaders of the committee P. Kanakamahalakshmi and Tumula Atchutavalli were among those present.
