Cook food on the road in front of Prakasam Bhavan in protest against price rise
Activists of the Telugu Mahila (TDP women's wing) on Monday cooked food on the road to highlight the plight of women under the impact of skyrocketing prices of essential commodities.
They raised slogans against the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre and the Kiran Kumar Reddy government in the State for their ‘total failure' to make available food articles at reasonable prices.
Making ‘upma', the activists said this was usually cheap and quick to make by women. “But none of the ingredients is within the reach of the common people now,” they lamented.
Addressing the activists, TDP district president D. Janardhan dubbed the ongoing Rachabanda programme a ‘total waste' as the State government had not acted upon the petitions submitted in the first phase of the programme. TDP State secretary T. Aruna, leading the protest, said while the farmer was not even getting Rs. 2 per kg for tomato, consumers were forced to shell out Rs. 20 per kg.
TDP women's wing district president T. Madhavi said, “the government is answerable to the women who are upset with huge increase in the prices of groceries, including tamrind, redgram, blackgram, and edible oil.
Women's wing district secretary T. Ananthamma said the State government should intervene in the market and ensure that food articles were available at reasonable prices at rythu baazar.
Reduction in the price of subsidised rice by Re.1 for the BPL families was no relief to women who take money in big baskets only to return with very little food articles from the market, Telugu Mahila district vice-presidents G. Padmavathi and U. Nagendram said.
Women's wing district secretary Mary Ratnakumari felt that a district-level monitoring cell should be constituted and stern action taken against traders to curb hoarding. “We will not rest till the government took concrete steps in the interest of the common people,” party's women's wing town president T. Ramadevi and town secretary Lakshmi Kumari said.
