Yerran Naidu flags off programme; 24-day yatra to end on February 20

KAUTALA (Adilabad): Ahead of the 480-km Godavari Jala Sadhana Yatra by its Telangana-based leaders from Mancherial, 110 km from here, the Telugu Desam, Party performed a pooja at Pranahita, a tributary of the Godavari on Friday night.

Over a dozen TDP leaders of the region and a large number of supporters descended at the mouth of the river in pitch darkness. They were received by enthusiastic villagers holding torches and paving the way for them through sand dunes. The huge convoy of vehicles passed through an un-motorable track through maize fields. The leaders were received with traditional harathi by the women.

Earlier, the leaders addressed a public meeting in this interior mandal headquarters village, 13 km from the river.

Incidentally, the event marks the locking of horns by the Congress and the TDP while launching mass awareness programme about rival parties neglecting this backward region.

River linkage

The TDP has taken up the padayatra demanding linkage of Pranahita with Godavari at Ellampally near Mancherial and carrying the water right up to Chevella in Ranga Reddy district. The 24-day padayatra is will culminate in a public meeting at Nizam College grounds in Hyderabad on February 20.

The Congress will also launch a counter campaign from this village on Saturday. Congress leaders said their programme is aimed at cleansing the evil perpetrated by the TDP through its padayatra. Major Irrigation Minister, Ponnala Lakshmaiah, will lay the foundation stones for two lift irrigation schemes at Timmidihetti and Sandgaon villages as part of the launch of the Congress campaign from this village.Special Correspondent from Hyderbad adds that K. Yerran Naidu, leader the Telugu Desam Parliamentary Party flagged off the padayatra from the NTR Statue at Rasoolpura here on Friday. He did the honours as the party President N.
