Silver jubilee celebrations of VMC on the anvil
Mayor says a logo with caption in Telugu will lend local flavourOfficials for English logo with Telugu version also
VIJAYAWADA: Even as the contest to choose a logo for the city for the silver jubilee celebrations of the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) continued to receive good response, the demand for creating a logo with a Telugu caption came up from within some quarters.
Mayor Tadi Sakuntala broached the issue at a meeting convened to review the preparations for the silver jubilee celebrations, which was addressed by District Collector Navin Mittal.
She said that the demand for logo with Telugu caption was coming from several denizens who were otherwise appreciative of the corporation's decision to elicit their opinion. A logo with a Telugu caption would give more local flavour, she felt.
The Mayor brought the issue up for discussion once again in a closed-door meeting with Mr. Mittal, VMC Commissioner Natarajan Gulzar and others in her chambers later.
Floor leader of Communist Party of India (Marxist) Ch. Babu Rao too said that the logos designed by the corporation had a corporate appearance and without a Telugu caption they would have no relevance. Mr. Babu Rao also expressed dissatisfaction over the decision to get the city logo unveiled in Hyderabad.
Symbol of city
Mr. Gulzar, when contacted, said that the schedule of the contest and proposed unveiling of the same by Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy would be followed as decided. The logo selected by people would be popularised in Telugu version too.
"The logo is a symbol of the city, and as such, language is not an issue. All cities have their logos only in English, including the logo recently designed for the 200 years celebration of Secunderabad," he said.
The Collector too cast his vote at the review meeting and put it in the box arranged in the council hall.
