Congress MLA Konda Surekha and MLC Konda Muralidhar Rao demanded that the Ministers hailing from Warangal district, Baswaraju Saraiah and Ponnala Lakshmaiah, tender their resignation in support of separate Telangana issue.
Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, they said they were ready to give up their positions if the Congress leaders decided en masse demanding the separate statehood to the region.
Ms. Surekha said they would join the students in staging demonstrations at the residences of both the Ministers and also take part in agitation directly henceforth.
“Mr. Saraiah, Jana Reddy, K. Kesava Rao and others spoke much about the separate Telangana and are now back tracking. We demand that they should first resign for their posts and lead the movement,” the duo said.
Had the MLAs from Telangana declined the Cabinet berths, the party high command would have seriously thought about the Telangana issue, they opined.
Appealing to the students and youth to restrain from committing suicides, they favoured a peaceful prolonged agitation to secure the separate Telangana state.
Ms. Surekha also demanded that the Home Minister should ensure that police do not attack the students unnecessarily to stifle movement.
The students should be allowed to carry on their peaceful protests. The State government had already faulted by not implementing the promise of Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram of withdrawing cases against the students.
“It took one full year for the State government to withdraw cases. But, there is a conspiracy going to book cases against the students again. The police are resorting to oppression in Osmania University campus,” Ms. Surekha said.
