TDP District President and Chilakaluripet MLA Pratthipati Pulla Rao described the victory of candidates supported by his party in the first phase of Panchayat elections in Tenali division, as a slap in the face of the Congress Government and exuded confidence that the main Opposition will post a similar performance in the subsequent phases of the elections.

In a meeting with activists of the party’s women wing ‘Telugu Mahila' on Wednesday, Mr. Pulla Rao said the Government had deliberately kept the elections pending for nearly two years in its political interests, thereby dealing a blow to local self-governance.

The villages were under the rule of special officers devoid of proper direction and financial support from the Government.

The ruling party will bear the consequences of its wrongdoings in the ensuing municipal and general elections, he said.

Vemuru MLA N. Ananda Babu said devolution of administrative powers and funding to villages has never been done to the full extent. The purpose of the 73rd and 74th Constitutional amendments was defeated.

TDP leaders Ch. Chittibabu, A. Siva Prasada Rao, Telugu Mahila leaders K. Rama Santha Devi, N. Vijaya Lakshmi and others participated.
