KADAPA: Telugu Desam Party district president S. Raghurami Reddy on Thursday demanded the Central Government to announce Rs. 1,000 as the minimum support price for paddy.
The Centre was adopting a different stand in fixing the support price for Southern and Northern India, he alleged at a press conference here.
Despite the Congress Government’s claims to be pro-farmer, farmers were committing suicides due to lack of remunerative prices for agricultural produce, he said.
Farmers were losing paddy crop at least once in three years and their plight was pathetic due to rise in labourers’ wages, tractor rents and prices of pesticides and lack of remunerative prices, he asserted.
Minimum Support Price fixed for wheat in northern India was Rs. 50 higher than that of Southern States in 2004-05 and the disparity rose to Rs. 200 in 2006-07, Mr. Raghurami Reddy said.
The variation was about Rs. 300 this year, he said. The Government issued a G.O. enhancing the paddy price from Rs. 645 to Rs. 675, he said and demanded orders increasing wheat price to Rs. 1,000.
TDP would chalk out an agitation programme if the support price was not hiked, he warned.
TDP district vice-president G. Lakshmi Reddy and office secretary L. Madhusudan Reddy were among those present.
