Telugu Desam activists staged a protest at the Collectorate against the alleged attack on its MLA Chintamaneni Prabhakar by Tourism Minister Vatti Vasantakumar at the Rachabanda programme in the district recently.
Addressing the protesters, TDP former minister Maganti Venkateswara Rao strongly criticised the police for arresting Mr. Prabhakar while letting off the Minister, who was an ‘accused' in the attack. He demanded that the police uphold the rule of law by registering a case of assault against the Minister and bring him to book. He alleged that Mr. Vasantakumar was unleashing a reign of terror against his political rivals in the district, especially those from the TDP.
The TDP's demand for action against the Minister obviously drew strong rebuttal from the Congress.
Addressing a media conference, Congress former MLA Ghanta Muraliramakrishna took strong exception to the TDP projecting the Minister as an accused. The visuals telecast on the TV channels were an evidence for the ‘unruly' behaviour of Mr. Prabhakar, he pointed out. The Minister only tried to stall the MLA when the latter was charging towards Congress MP Kavuri Sambasiva Rao, he said.
Meanwhile, a posse of armed forces took position guarding the Collectorate and kept the protestors at bay.
