Cong finishes third in the hustings
Telugu Desam Party seemed to have regained some of the lost ground going by the results of the second phase of elections for gram panchayat held on Saturday. The Congress on the other hand, managed to put up a better performance in comparison to the drubbing it had received in Tenali revenue division in the first phase of polling, but still ended up finishing in the third place.
The party has gained significantly in Mangalagiri and Prathipadu Assembly segments but the Congress has managed to put up a decent show in Tadikonda segment, represented by Rural Development Minister D. Manikya Vara Prasada Rao.
Congress MLA Kandru Kamala and Prathipadu MLA Mekathoti Sucharita, both have to suffer the ignominy of having their candidates being defeated.
Out of the total tally, candidates supported by TDP had won in 102 panchayats, YSRCP in 67 panchayats and Congress in 44 segments. The YSRCP, it appeared, had managed to hive off a significant percentage of voters belonging to Scheduled Castes in all segments.
At Pedakakani, Alla Veera Raghavamma, wife of Ramky Chairman Alla Dasaradharami Reddy, won by over 4,000 votes over nearest rival Peddi Radha supported by TDP. The overwhelming majority was a telling blow to the TDP and particularly to Ponnur MLA D. Narendra Kumar who had spent a considerable amount of time and energy in a bid to wrest the high profile panchayat.
But the YSRC tasted defeat in Mutlur segment in Prathipadu Assembly segment as the TDP candidate propped by Congress won the panchayat.
