Congress wins 167 seats while TRS wins 112 in second phase of PR polls

The second phase of the panchayat elections held on Saturday gave some breather to the ruling Congress party and the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) while the TDP was left disappointed. Out of the 395 panchayats (including 10 unanimous) that went to polls, for which results were declared at night, the Congress won 167, followed by TRS, 112, TDP, 52, BJP, 4, CPI, 5, and others 53.

Deputy Chief Minister Damodar Rajanarasimha held sway in Andol constituency with Congress supporters winning 68 out of the 104 panchayats. While TRS supporters won in 20 panchayats, TDP’s win was limited to seven seats.

In Narsapur, represented by Women and Child Welfare Minister V. Sunitha Lakshma Reddy, the Congress was able to win 52 seats by pushing the TRS to second place with 51 seats. TDP won only six seats.

The situation for the TDP was so bad that the party failed to prove its strength even in the constituency being represented by district unit president M. Hanumantha Rao. Out of a total of 100 panchayats, the TRS was able to win 36 seats followed by the Congress, 21, and the TDP, 20. The clear indication from the second phase was that the Congress was able to retain its strength to some extent.
