VISAKHAPATNAM: Police used force to disperse clashing workers of the Telugu Desam and the Congress during the Intinta Indiramma programme at Balighattam near Narsipatnam on Tuesday evening.

Narsipatnam MLA and senior TDP leader Ch. Ayyanna Patrudu and his younger brother and Narsipatnam Sarpanch Sanyasi Patrudu were engaged in heated exchanges with Parawada MLA and DCC president Gandi Babji and Zilla Parishad Chairman Gorle Ramamurthy Naidu in the presence of Minister Konthala Ramakrishna.

Much before the Minister and others reached Balighattam, Mr. Patrudu along with some 1,000 party workers went to the venue to seek a definite assurance from Mr. Ramakrishna that the alumina refinery would not be established at Makavaripalem falling under Narsipatnam Assembly constituency. Comments made by Mr. Patrudu on Mr. Babji while addressing his party workers sparked clashes between the TDP and Congress supporters. Later, Mr. Ramakrishna announced that farmers would be consulted before taking a decision on the alumina refinery.
