VIJAYAWADA: Taxpayers’ Association has strongly opposed the final notification with regard to revision of rental values in the city issued by the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) on Saturday.

Association president V. Sambi Reddy and secretary M.V. Anjaneyulu said that thousands of people filed objections to the revision proposals made in the preliminary notification. The officials issued the final notification without considering the objections and suggestions made by taxpayers, ratepayers and other associations. In addition, the officials had assured that the property tax would not be hiked for residential properties. But, the corporation failed to keep its promise, they said.

They urged the people to reject the final notification. They also wanted the corporation to issue a fresh notification revising the rental values for the residential properties or retain the existing rental values.

The CPI (M) city strongly opposed the final notification.

Addressing a press conference here, CPI (M) floor leader in VMC general body Ch. Babu Rao alleged that the corporation issued the final notification in haste only to avoid stiff resistance from the general body. Mayor Mallika Begum deliberately delayed the process of convening special meeting on revision of rental values. Had the special meeting been convened by now, the corporation would not have imposed steep hike in rental values, he said.

Mr. Babu Rao expressed the view that the corporation should have retained existing rental values for the residential properties.
