Municipal corporation's ‘Know your tax' facilitates payment at the click of the mouse

Tax-payers of the Rajahmundry Municipal Corporation (RMC) have a reason to rejoice. The civic body is devising various assessee-friendly ways of collecting different taxes, which obviates their need to go to the corporation office and stand in queues for making payment.

For the Net-savvy, the corporation will soon launch ‘Know your tax' facility. Sitting in the cosy comforts of the home, the tax-payer can just log into the corporation's website and click the ‘Know your tax' column. He then needs to find the assessee number and name. A ‘payment gateway box' will then appear on the screen through which the tax amount can be remitted.

“We have reached an agreement with the IDBI Bank to provide this facility. The tax-payer can use the Visa or Master card of any bank to make the payment using this facility,” says Municipal Commissioner K. Manik Raj.

For those who cannot come all the way to the RMC counter to pay tax, the corporation has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with Axis and IDBI banks. People can make payments through a challan in these banks.

“The challan will have all the details printed on it and the tax-payers have to just enter the assessment number and the amount to the remitted,” the Commissioner says.

Through ATMs

Consultations are under way with officials of Axis Bank to allow payment of tax through the bank's ATM centres. This will help people transfer the tax amount from their ATM cards to the RMC account in a jiffy, the Commissioner added.

To make the job of the tax-payers much easier, the corporation has devised another new method.

Equipped with teller machines, municipal tax officials will go round the city to collect taxes from the assessees.

“They will collect cheque or swipe the debit card of the tax-payer and give the receipt for the amount paid on the spot,” Mr. Manik Raj says.

File monitoring

The RMC will also launch the ‘file monitoring' system through its website. This will help people trace their files and know the status. They will even know where the file is pending and in which department.

This will fix the responsibility on employees of the corporation.
