VISAKHAPATNAM: ‘Sayamkaalamaindi’ (It’s evening). This is the opening sentence of Gurajada Appa Rao’s immortal play ‘Kanyasulkam’.
‘Damn it! katha addamga thirigindi’ is another expression in the play that is too popular among the literati to need any elaboration.
The play ends with this sentence.
Gireesam, a unique character in the entire Telugu literature, utters both the first and the last sentences of the play. This important character, along with Madhuravani, form the backbone of the play.
Local literary organisation Sahitya Surabhi will organise a talk on ‘Gurajada’s Kanyasulkam -Gireesam’. Rambhatla Nrusimha Sarma will be the sole speaker at the event to be held at the Builders’ Association Hall, Siripuram, on Sunday at 5 p.m.
