All-party meet held on Monday

ONGOLE: An all-party meeting has demanded the State Government to take up second phase of Nagarjuna Sagar project to supply water to the most backward and drought prone areas of Prakasam and Nellore districts.

Addressing the meeting, former minister and convenor of struggle committee Madala Janakiram said the Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy had taken up several irrigation projects under Jalayagnam to benefit all regions of the State. But he expressed dismay that the second phase of Nagarjuna Sagar did not find place even among pending projects.

He said the second phase of Nagarjuna Sagar project would benefit Udayagiri, Kavali, Atmakur areas in Nellore district and Kanigiri, Kandukur, Kondepi and Podili areas of Prakasam district which are known for lowest rainfall.

Yet the Government is neglecting the second phase for want of pressure from elected representatives from these areas. He said he had held meetings in Vijayawada and Hyderabad for demanding second phase, but they did not have any impact on the State and Central Governments.

The TDP, CPI and CPI(M) leaders expressed willingness to struggle for second phase. It was decided to hold a seminar on the issue in Ongole on March 9.
