A sense of relief for Congress corporators

  • M.V. Ratna Bindu of the Congress is tipped to succeed Sakuntala
  • A year's tenure not enough to deliver goods: Sakuntala

VIJAYAWADA: Ending days of speculation over her political moves, Mayor Tadi Sakuntala submitted her resignation to the general body of the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) on Monday.

The general body, which sat till 8.30 p.m. to transact the listed business, immediately approved her resignation. Ms. Sakuntala sought special permission of the meeting to take up her resignation as the last item, after which Congress floor leader K. Rajasekhar moved it in the form of a resolution. It was taken as approved in the absence of any other opinion.

In the wake of Ms. Sakuntala's resignation, a sense of relief was palpable on the faces of Congress corporators, especially M.V. Ratna Bindu, who is tipped to succeed Ms. Sakuntala. The two leaders later hugged each other, cracked jokes and posed for the lensmen.

Betraying no emotion and appearing composed, Ms. Sakuntala delivered a brief thanksgiving speech from the Chair, in which she harped on her oft-repeated contention that a year's tenure was not enough for any person to deliver goods.

    Divided term

Alluding to the divided term for Mayor of Vijayawada, as worked out by the Congress and the CPI, she euphemistically remarked while all 10 other Mayors in the State were able to continue with a peace of mind, only the Mayor of Vijayawada had no such comfort.

"But within limitations, I tried to perform to the best of my ability and with the cooperation of all of you (corporators), people in general and the media," she remarked. Ms. Sakuntala took a dig at the media for publishing different reports about her political moves, and asserted she never hankered for any post.

The ball will now move briefly into the court of Commissioner Natarajan Gulzar who will have to inform the State Election Commission of the vacancy. Deputy Mayor Ch. Krishna Kumar will officiate as Mayor until the election of a successor to Ms. Sakuntala. By a conservative estimate, holding of the election will take a fortnight.
