VIJAYAWADA: West Godavari district, considered as the rice bowl of Andhra Pradesh, will be hosting a national chess championship after a gap of 52 years from November 3 to 11 when the 38th National Junior (u-19) boys and 23rd National girls championships kick starts at Tadepalligudem.

The adjacent Eluru town, the district headquarters, hosted the first-ever National chess championship under the aegis of All India Chess Federation in 1956, which saw Mr. D. Venkaiah, a player from Andhra Pradesh emerging as national champion. In fact, the championship was allotted to Vijayawada by the Andhra Pradesh Chess Association but due to unavoidable reasons, the tournament was shifted to Tadepalligudem.

“We are thrilled that our district is hosting a major national event after a long gap,” said West Godavari Chess Association secretary S. Chandrasekhar.
