He tries to convince them to toe the line of the party leadership

VIJAYAWADA: Film producer Vallabhaneni Vamsi Mohan on Sunday faced opposition from his supporters to the idea of contesting from the Vijayawada Lok Sabha constituency at the behest of the Telugu Desam Party leadership.

With pressure building up against his candidature from LS seat among his followers, Mr. Vamsi Mohan started making efforts to convince his supporters to toe the line of the party leadership.

He attended the meeting in Gannavaram with his close followers in the constituency immediately after arriving from Hyderabad. Hundreds of his followers from all over the constituency descended on the venue and expressed their dissatisfaction over the party’s decision not to give Gannavaram Assembly ticket to him. They demanded that Mr. Vamsi Mohan take a tough decision so as to assert his strength in the segment. However, Mr. Vamsi Mohan reportedly told his supporters to maintain restraint and consider the need for avoiding any damage to the TDP at this juncture. He said there were only two choices before him now -- rejecting the offer of Lok Sabha ticket and remaining calm or accepting the offer. Mr. Vamsi Mohan decided to leave the decision to his supporters who were with him through the recent years. The discussions were expected to continue till late night. Close followers said there was unexpectedly a huge crowd at the meeting on Sunday and many of them were against Mr. Vamsi Mohan moving out of the Assembly constituency. But the supporters were likely to be convinced about the immediate priority to abide by the party’s decision. The TDP urban leaders were mostly camping in Hyderabad, as important decisions about candidates for Vijayawada East and Penamaluru Assembly seats were yet to be taken.

The party leadership is stated to be considering various options considering the huge demand for Penamaluru ticket. B. Umamaheswara Rao, who hails from the Kapu community, seems to be a front-runner for the Vijayawada East segment. However, the party is expected to spring a surprise by asking a senior leader to contest from here so as to give a tough fight to Congress heavyweight Devineni Rajasekhar (Nehru).
