KARIMNAGAR: The Karimnagar district has gained a dubious distinction in the State with high incidence of suicides . During 2009, a total of 1,481 persons committed suicide against 1,379 persons in 2008.
Majority of suicides have been attributed to sickness, poverty and family disputes . Majority of persons committed suicide by consuming pesticides followed by hanging , burning and drowning.
Meanwhile of the 1,519 road accidents in 2009, 500 persons died and 2,026 sustained injuries. In a press note issued here on Monday, Superintendent of Police N. Shiva Shankar Reddy said that majority of accidents and casualties were taking place on Rajiv Rahadhari from Ramagundam to Hyderabad, which claimed 106 lives this year. He also said that there was decline in crime against the women in the district . Against a total of 1,304 cases reported in 2008, this year only 1,205 cases were reported .
He said that murders for dowry had declined from 11 cases in 2008 to only three cases in 2009. The dowry deaths were also low from 47 in 2008 to 37 this year. However, murders of women increased from 20 in 2008 to 22 in 2009. He also said that the dowry harassment cases had also increased form 589 in 2008 to 604 in 2009. On the naxalite front, the district was by and large peaceful with stray incidents of naxalites killing three persons in the Manthani and Peddapalli divisions. He said that there was no single exchange of fire in the district during this year. A total of 8 naxalites had surrendered before the police.
