HYDERABAD: Union Minister of State for Mines T. Subbarami Reddy on Tuesday appealed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to immediately release Rs.500 crores to the State as interim relief in view of the devastation caused by the heavy floods.
In a letter to Dr.Singh, Mr. Reddy urged the Centre to immediately send a team of experts to the State to assess the damage to crops, houses and roads.
It stated that 94 lives have been lost and lakhs rendered homeless in Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, Srikakulam, East and West Godavari, besides Nizamabad, Khammam and Karimnagar districts.
The Minister said the "State was suffering from floods not only due to the heavy rain lashing the State, but also due to the heavy inflow of floods from the neighbouring States of Maharashtra and Karnataka, through the Krishna and Godavari rivers."
He pointed out that the State Government had launched `massive' rescue and relief operations for the affected people.
"The entire State is fully geared up to meet this nature's fury," he said.
