KADAPA: Hundreds of degree and junior college students took out a rally in Proddatur town on Tuesday demanding augmentation of drinking water supply in the town.
BJP leader Kovvuru Balachandra Reddy, who organised the protest, alleged that water supplied by Proddatur municipality had high fluoride content posing health hazards. Ground water depleted to alarming levels and Pennar river did not have adequate inflows, he lamented. A GO issued two-and-half years ago to release water from Mylavaram reservoir to Pennar river was not yet implemented, he alleged. He charged public representatives and officials of being nonchalant towards the problems.
Mr. Reddy demanded steps to check spread of flourosis and renal ailments by supplying potable drinking water. The BJP leader warned of launching an indefinite hunger strike before Proddatur municipality office if safe drinking water supply was not supplied in the next 10 days. Proddatur Municipal Commissioner Gopalakrishna Reddy held discussions with the BJP leader and assured to apprise the Government on flourosis problem.
