GUNTUR: Students from all municipal schools in Guntur picketed the Guntur Municipal Corporation office here on Thursday protesting against poor amenities at a majority of the schools.

They sat in front of the main entrance of the administrative building and blocked the way to the Mayor’s Chamber raising slogans against the municipal authorities for their ‘negligence’ in providing at least drinking water. Many of the schools did not have running water in the toilets.

Mayor Rayapati Mohan Sai Krishna talked to the students and promised them all help in improving the sanitation conditions at schools and to provide drinking water supply within the next 10 days. “We shall hold a survey on the status of amenities in municipal schools and make the necessary repairs or changes to improve the infrastructure,” the Mayor said.

The SFI leaders expressed unhappiness at the lack of teaching staff at many schools and wanted the corporation to immediately fill the vacancies to ensure quality education. The leaders stopped the agitation after assurance from the Mayor, but threatened to intensify it if the promise was not met within time stipulated.
