With lights and fans off for want of power for at least one hour, students literally sweated it out and groped in the dark while taking their intermediate examinations in West Godavari district which commenced on Wednesday.

The candidates who took the exam at the district headquarters were however sparred from the power cuts even as their counterparts from the rural areas experienced the problem. The candidates, who were allotted a place close to the windows, were lucky to some extent. They struggled to clear the exam with ventilation coming through windows. The authorities of the Board of Intermediate Education (BoIE) did not allow candle light in the examination halls for safety of students since they might cause fire mishaps. The authorities, at the last minute, shifted the exam centres to the halls with good ventilation at the same designated places for the benefit of students. Meanwhile, principals of corporate and unaided colleges, also acting as per Additional Chief Superintendents of Examinations, were reportedly kept at a safe distance at the time of release of the question paper sets in the light of complaints of their alleged indulgence in leakage of question papers in a bid

to help out their own students. A little over 60,000 students are taking the first year and second year Intermediate examinations from the rict.
