The over one-lakh strong State Teachers union on Thursday threatened to intensify its State-wide agitation after Sankranti to press for acceptance of their 10-point charter of demands.
Leading a dharna by over members of the STU in front of the Prakasam Bhavan here, STU State President K. Narasimha Reddy demanded scrapping of the apprentice teachers system as per the recommendation of the Ninth Pay Revision Commission. “We will have no option but to intensify our stir after Sankaranti holidays if the Government does not concede our just demands,'' he added. The STU President urged the State government to allot Rs. 16,000 crore in the coming budget for effective implementation of the Right to Education Act which envisaged free and compulsory elementary education to every child and training to teachers. A delegation of STU leaders submitted a memorandum to the District Education Officer highlighting their demands, including upgradation of Telugu pandits and physical education teachers in government, aided and Municipal schools in the grade of teachers, notional increment for untrained teachers .
