ONGOLE: The Nagarjunasagar second phase struggle committee has threatened to intensify its agitation if the government failed to lay foundation stone for the project before April 15.

Addressing a seminar held here on Wednesday, the former minister, Madala Janakiram, said that the second phase would benefit the most backward areas of Prakasam and Nellore districts. The upland areas in these two districts record the lowest rainfall in the State.

He said that the Congress Government had taken up several irrigation projects in the State under the Jalayagnam programme but had neglected the second phase of Nagarjuna Sagar mainly due to lack of pressure from elected representatives from these two districts.

He said that the struggle committee would undertake padayatras and take the movement to villages to educate people on the need to agitate for the project.

Leaders belonging to the TDP, the BJP, the CPI and the CPI(M) felt the need to agitate for the second phase keeping politics away.
