Though the Congress has yet to declare the name of its nominee, it is expected that a ‘strong' contender from that party will make the by-election to Adilabad Assembly constituency an interesting affair.
While Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) is set to field Jogu Ramanna, the Telugu Desam (TDP) has unofficially declared spokesman Payal Shankar to be its nominee.
Jogu Ramanna, whose resignation from TDP membership and as MLA saw the by-election being held here, is a grass-root politician. He was a member of TDP since the party's inception and was Sarpanch of Deepaiguda gram panchayat in Jainad mandal.
Before being elected as MLA on that party's ticket in 2009, Ramanna served for one term as Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituency member from Jainad. His long and continuing stint in politics makes him a formidable opponent.
Payal Shankar, also of Jainad mandal, began his political career as an ordinary member of TDP under the tutelage of Jogu Ramanna. While his wife was made sarpanch of Ada gram panchayat, he represented Jainad mandal in the ZP and was subsequently made spokesman of the party in the district.
The TDP leader is known for his political acumen as he had managed the electoral campaign of Ramanna in 2009.
Thanks to that election, he boasts of direct contact with the electorate in the three mandals of the constituency.
The Congress party, according to sources, may narrow down its choice of a candidate to District Congress Committee (DCC) president and former Minister C. Ramchander Reddy. A veteran in the field of politics he is the sworn political enemy of the TRS and TDP probables.
