‘State urged to decide on it only after civic body elections'
The Citizens Forum and senior leaders of opposition parties on Thursday asked the government to take a decision on enhancement of property tax only after completion of the municipal elections.
They said the civic bodies should not take any decision on property tax without the consent of the elected body.
Leaders of opposition parties and representatives of the Citizens Forum staged a protest at Srikakulam Municipal office opposing the heavy tax burden on people.
TDP leaders K. Yerrannaidu and G. Appalasuryanarayana, and Citizens Forum president Baratam Kameswara Rao opposed the steep hike in property tax and seizure of movable properties of those who had not cleared the arrears.
“Without providing basic amenities, the municipal officials are increasing taxes. Influential people and political leaders are being let off.
They should first collect Rs.2.5 crore arrears from such people to meet the financial needs of the civic body,” said Mr. Kameswara Rao.
