HYDERABAD: Statistics is concerned with understanding the real world through the information that can be derived from classification and measurement. It might be a relatively new discipline but with ubiquitous applications, there is no branch of physical or social sciences which can do without the discipline of statistics, observed the C. Rangarajan, Chairman, Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council, here on Wednesday.
Participating in the international conference on ‘Frontiers of Interface Between Statistics and Sciences’ organised by the C.R.Rao Advanced Institute of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Sciences (AIMSCS) at the University of Hyderabad here, Dr. Rangarajan underscored the enormous contributions made by C.R.Rao to statistics and related disciplines. “We have assembled today to pay our tributes to Dr.C.R.Rao who is reaching the age of 90.”
An outstanding statistician, Dr.Rao with his path breaking articles spread over several decades gave shape to statistics as a separate discipline, Dr. Rangarajan said.
