An eight-member inter-ministerial Central team, led by senior bureaucrat A.K. Goyal, called on Chief Minister K. Rosaiah in the Assembly on Thursday.

The team, which had visited areas affected by cyclone ‘Laila' in Prakasam, Krishna and West Godavari districts between May 17 and 22, conveyed to the Chief Minister their assessment of the situation in the aftermath of the storm.

State government officials informed the Central team that the cyclone had affected 14 districts in all covering a population of 17.80 lakh. In all, 22 persons were reported dead. In a report submitted to the team, the government stated that the total value of loss due to the cyclone from all sectors was estimated at Rs.1,603 crore. The government sought Rs. 1,357 crore towards rescue and relief operations and temporary and permanent restoration of damages to infrastructure. The State had sanctioned Rs. 396 crore for temporary restoration of the infrastructure.
