Governments must consider protection of cows as a special issue, head of Sri Peetham of Kakinada Swami Paripoornananda after he visited the temporary shelter for calves provided by the Simhachalam Devasthanam at Srikrishnapuram on Friday. He regretted that calves died in a large number at the Gosala of the temple but no leader had reacted. “It is foolish to consider cow as a animal revered by Hindus while it is lifeline of agriculture in the country. . However, the Government is not bothered to protect cows”, he said. Calves which have fallen sick due to congestion, heat, lack of drinking water, inadequate fodder and other reasons at the Gosala were shifted to Srikrishnapuram site where temporary shelters, drinking water, veterinary aid were provided. The more than 800 calves recovered after attention was paid to them. Jersy breed calves died as they could not withstand the heat and other adverse conditions. The Simhachalam Devasthanam decided not to accept calves as donation as their number has gone up beyond manageable limits. Instead of donating a calf to fulfil his or her wish a devotee can donate Rs. 516 to the temple. Action was taken against two employees connected with Gosala.
