The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has alleged that the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGS) was being misused by the State government. Crores of rupees were being swindled under the garb of the scheme, according to Mylavaram MLA and Telugu Desam Party district president Devineni Umamaheswara Rao.
Addressing a press conference here on Monday, the Telugu Desam Party leader said the government was issuing GOs in the name of former public representatives like village sarpanches. As many as Rs. 2,150 crore worth works were sanctioned to the former public representatives. Had the government invited tenders it would have saved at least 10 per cent of funds. Even Comptroller and Auditor General pointed out the lapses in the implementation of the scheme, he said.
The IAS officers, who made a hue and cry over the arrest of Srilakshmi and others, owe an explanation why they signed the GOs issued in the name of former public representatives, he said.
Referring to power cut, Mr. Rao said the government had utterly failed in meeting the requirements. The industries were almost closing down their operations. The students were the worst sufferers, he added.
Telugu Desam Party State general secretary Bonda Umamaheswara Rao was present.
