They are leading a miserable life, says SJM survey

The Swadeshi Jagaran Manch (SJM) has demanded the government rescue the weavers in Kappaladoddi village from distress.

Addessing a press conference here on Monday, SJM Andhra and Karnataka Secretary Appala Prasad said the Mach conducted a survey on the status of weavers in Kappaladoddi village in Gudur mandal of the district.

The survey pointed out that as many as 800 weaver families were leading miserable life.

The weavers unable to repay the loans were committing suicides. The government, however, did not provide any financial assistance to them.

The government should extend financial assistance from the Chief Minister Relief Fund to them immediately, he said.

No help

The weavers were unable to compete with the power looms though the weavers produce best of sarees on their pit looms. The government was not extending any kind of help to weavers, and most of the welfare schemes also were not reaching the needy.

It was a hard fact that the APCO does not clear bills in time. The weavers find it difficult to raise the investments again and again, he said.

The government needs to waive off the loans taken by the weavers, and sanction interest free loans afresh. The APCO should clear the bills for the purchases made from the weavers immediately. The Antyodaya scheme should be extended to all weaver families.

Providing yarn on subsidy, construction of gunta maggam with cement, medical and education facilities were some of the other demands. Survey convener Srinivas and co-convener Satish were also present.
