Upset at being ditched by her boyfriend over dowry demand, a 25-year-old committed suicide on Saturday by consuming hair dye at her house in Ramanthapur under Uppal police station limits.

Alekhya from Mancherial in Adilabad fell in love with her classmate Prasad while pursuing MBA in 2008. Since then they have been in a live-in relationship, staying in a rented house at Ramanthapur. The duo were employed with different private firms, said Uppal Sub-Inspector T. Kiran Kumar.

Prasad had been avoiding her of late after his parents asked him to return to his native Karimnagar. Alekhya and her family made vain efforts to to convince him for marriage.

Prasad’s family, however, allegedly demanded Rs.15 lakh in dowry, which Alekhya’s parents were unable to pay. Alekhya, who went into depression, consumed two bottles of hair dye close to midnight on Saturday after sending an SMS to her boss, informing him of her decision. The latter alerted her family, who in turn called up the police.

“We rushed her to a nearby private hospital where she died while undergoing treatment,” police said. Prasad has been booked under IPC Section 306 (abetment of suicide) and taken into custody.

Police said both Prasad and Alekhya had cleared the physical test for sub-inspector’s post. They had also appeared for the written test and were awaiting results.
