In the backdrop of verdant hills, a colourful start was given to the State-level sports carnival being hosted by the Chalapathi Institute of Technology here on Saturday.

Boys and girls from different engineering colleges across the four districts — Guntur, Prakasam, Krishna, and Godavari — lined up for the four-day carnival being held at the CIT, Mothadaka. Students would have their skills tested on the playing arenas spread out on the campus.

Competitions in rural games such as kabaddi, volleyball, throw ball, tennicoit, carom board, and chess are lined up for the carnival.

Chalapathi Educational Institutions president Y.V. Anjaneyulu said that CIT was playing host to the sports carnival to inculcate the sportive spirit, fair play, and honesty, besides improving their fitness levels.

Earlier, the carnival got off to a colourful start with players staging a march past. Pathikonda MLA and Andhra Kabaddi Association president K.E. Prabhakar inaugurated the carnival by releasing a bunch of balloons.

Way to keep fit

Mr. Prabhakar said students should be drawn to colleges and not feel like engaging in drudgery.

He regaled the students by narrating some witty anecdotes and urged the managements to create sporting infrastructure in colleges. Playing sports and games regularly keeps one fit and healthy.

Physical Education director S. Ramu said the CIT had been hosting the State-level cricket tournament since January 2.

Two teams CIT, Mothadaka, and SSN Engineering College, Ongole, reached the finals to be played on January 21.

The valedictory would be held on January 22 with Minister for Rural Development D.M. Vara Prasada Rao and chess champion Koneru Hampi taking part as guests of honour.
