ELURU: The pleas for immediate relief by the drought victims greeted the visiting Special Officer, Drought, G. Jayalakshmi in West Godavari district on Thursday.

Ms. Jayalakshmi visited the drought-affected areas in Chintalapudi and T. Narsapur mandals and took stock of the situation. The farmers at Sayampalem in T. Narsapur mandal said agriculture bores in their area failed due to depletion of ground water tables. The entire 3,500 acres of land in their village is completely dependent on ground water as the nearby Vengalaraya Sagar dried up. The farmers requested the government for help to undertake repairs to the defunct borewells. Chintalapudi MLA Maddala Rajesh petitioned the Special Officer on the need for supply of drinking water in drought-hit areas on a war-footing and supply of seed and fertiliser at subsidised rates by the government to the victims. At a review meeting, district Collector A. Vani Prasad requested Ms. Jayalakshmi to take up with the government the issue of rescheduling of loans obtained by the Self-Help Group (SHG) women from banks in the areas declared as drought hit by the government.
