Protests marred the District Review Committee (DRC) meeting here on Friday as the TDP elected representatives staged a sit-in demonstration in front of the podium resenting the inordinate delay in allotment of house sites to the poor people in Khammam. The house site issue rocked the DRC meeting which held after a long gap of over one year. TDP senior leader and Khammam MLA Tummala Nageswara Rao prominently raised the issue soon after a Power Point demonstration by Collector Siddharth Jain on the “achievements during 2011-12”. Mr Rao apprised Minister for Tribal Welfare P. Balaraju, the district in-charge minister, who was in the Chair, about the predicament of around 3,454 patta holders under Indiramma phase-II of the town. He lamented that the poor people were deprived of house sites despite possessing pattas allotted to them nearly four years ago. Two Chief Ministers, three in-charge district ministers and two Collectors changed in the last four years, he said deploring that the housing problem of more than 3,400 patta holders remained unresolved till date. Mr Rao accompanied by MP Nama Nageswara Rao, MLA S Venkata Veeraiah, MLCs P Nageswara Rao and B Lakshminarayana squatted in front of the podium demanding announcement of a specific date for allotment of house sites to the patta holders. Kothagudem MLA K Sambasiva Rao of the CPI also joined them in the sit-in protest. Mr Balaraju and Minister for Horticulture R Venkat Reddy made consistent attempts to persuade the protesting TDP leaders in vain.

TDP’s poser

The ruling party elected representatives maintained that Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy has already issued orders in favour of allotment of house sites to the patta holders.

Agitated TDP leaders sought to know as to why the departments concerned had failed to implement the “order”. Nama Nageswara Rao questioned the rationale behind not showing house sites to the poor even nearly four years after issuing pattas. Utter chaos prevailed at this juncture as Congress MLC P. Sudhakar Reddy entered into a heated argument with some of the agitated TDP leaders. Deputy Speaker Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka intervened and suggested that a separate meeting should be conducted to find a quick and lasting solution to the housing problem. Mr. Balaraju announced that a special meeting would be convened soon to look into the technical aspects if any involved in the issue and ensure house sites to all the patta holders at the earliest.
